Electrostatics
A small sphere carrying a charge of \(2 \,\mu C\) is placed at a distance of \(0.5\,m\) from another sphere carrying a charge of \(8 \,\mu C\).
Calculate the electrostatic force between them. State whether the force is attractive or repulsive.

Detailed Solution

Using Coulomb’s Law:

\[ F = k\frac{q_1 q_2}{r^2} \]

Given:

\[ q_1 = 2 \times 10^{-6} C \] \[ q_2 = 8 \times 10^{-6} C \] \[ r = 0.5\,m \] \[ k = 9 \times 10^9 \, Nm^2/C^2 \]

Substituting the values:

\[ F = 9 \times 10^9 \times \frac{ (2 \times 10^{-6})(8 \times 10^{-6}) }{ (0.5)^2 } \] \[ F = 9 \times 10^9 \times \frac{ 16 \times 10^{-12} }{ 0.25 } \] \[ F = 0.576\,N \]
Answer: \(0.576\,N\) (Repulsive Force)
